A Harworth and Bircotes resident has been ordered to pay £1,906 by Nottingham Magistrates for refusing to remove waste dumped around her property.
Mattresses, fridges, a sofa, duvets, and bagged waste were seen outside a property on Sherwood Road when a Bassetlaw District Council Environmental Health Officer visited on 14th March 2024.
After being asked to clear it, as it was both an eyesore and raised concerns that it was likely to attract vermin, the occupant, Dianne Glaves then failed to adhere to a Community Protection Warning and then a Community Protection Notice (CPN) issued on 2nd April 2024 requiring her to remove the waste within 14 days.
A subsequent inspection on 17th April revealed much of the waste remained at the property, which required the Council’s Environment Services Team to clear it away at a cost of £406, which she failed to pay.
Glaves was summonsed to attend Nottingham Magistrates Court for the hearing on 9th August 2024, which she did not attend and had not entered a plea.
She was found guilty in her absence of failing to comply with a Community Protection Notice: an offence under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, and was fined £300, costs of £1,080, compensation of £406 and a victim surcharge of £120.
Cllr Darrell Pulk, Cabinet Member for Environment and Energy at Bassetlaw District Council said: “This resident was given several opportunities to remove the waste without any further action or penalty, but they failed to do so, resulting in council staff carrying out the works.
“This successful prosecution serves as a reminder to residents they risk being the subject of court action if they fail to engage with the requests of our officers to dispose of their waste in a timely and responsible manner.”
