The community of Walkeringham has been busy knitting and nattering to create stunning displays for Remembrance Day, thanks to a Councillor Community Grant.
Around 8,000 poppies can be seen around the village, which have been knitted by the Walkeringham Knit and Natter group after Cllr Joan Sanger MBE, Ward Member for Walkeringham and Beckingham donated £200 to purchase the wool for the project.
The Village Hall is one of the key places where people visiting or passing through the village can see the hard work by the group. The poppies are supported by ‘Lest We Forget’ soldiers and metal horses, artefacts which are also purchased through the grant.
Roz Roberts treasurer of Walkeringham Village Hall and Playing Field Committee said: “We are very grateful for the contribution from Cllr Sanger.
“Recently, the Knit and Natter Group has gone from strength to strength and this project has been an exciting one for everyone. Hopefully the displays that are shown throughout the village will attract more people to our village hall and put Walkeringham on the map.”
Walkeringham Knit and Natter group started in April 2024 and currently has between 10 and 15 ladies in the group. They meet every Wednesday afternoon from 1 to 3pm.
Cllr Sanger added: “Both villages have done a marvellous job knitting their poppies and have each reached a marvellous total. What an amazing display to honour our brave armed forces who served in both world wars and other major historical conflicts.”
Each Bassetlaw District Councillor is allocated a small budget and has the discretion to award grants to activities that will benefit the community within their respective electoral ward areas. Councillors will consider grant applications for sports; culture and heritage; environment and sustainability; social welfare; and community activities
