A sewing group in Ordsall have been given a helping hand with new equipment and materials thanks to a Councillor Community Grant.
The Sew n Sew Group, set up in February last year by Susan Walker, meet every Thursday at Ordsall Parish Hall bringing those with a passion for sewing together to create items from bags to rugs, as well as providing an opportunity to socialise.
Thanks to a £150 Grant by Cllr Carolyn Troop, Ward Member for East Retford South, the group’s been able to purchase an ironing board, cutting boards, sewing threads and patterns.
Susan Walker, founder of the Sew n Sew group said: “Our sincere thanks to Cllr Troop for donating towards the Sew n Sew group. The grant will help us go a long way in continuing to grow the group. I set up this group for people to create a relaxed environment for mindfulness, boost mental health and people can enjoy social interaction through their love of sewing. To be able to purchase more equipment for the group it allows us to be more creative and have more fun with what we make.”
The group attracts members of all ages, currently ranging from 30 to 80 years old with different levels of experience and from various parts of the district.
Cllr Troop added: “It’s important to support these groups in our community as they bring people from different ages from across the district together. The work that Susan has done to grow the group in a short amount of time is fantastic and I can only see this group growing from strength to strength.”
Each Bassetlaw District Councillor is allocated a small budget and has the discretion to award grants to community activities that will benefit the community within their respective electoral ward areas.
