North Leverton’s inaugural trail running event, the Scrimshire’s Scramble, will take place this weekend and provide runners and walkers with some of the best scenery the area has to offer, as well a bit of a muddy challenge.
The free 10k event, that is almost entirely off-road, has been backed by a £2,100 Arts and Heritage Grant as part of Bassetlaw District Council’s allocation of the Government’s Rural England Prosperity Fund.
This has allowed the organisers to provide medals and T-shirts for the event’s 165 participants, as well as helping with some of the event costs. Any proceeds raised on the day will also help to fund the future upkeep of Leverton Windmill.
James Barlow, co-organiser of the Scrimshire's Scramble, said; "We are very excited to host our first 10k event which starts and finishes at North Leverton Windmill.
“The grant has been a massive help in enabling us to purchase some of the equipment needed for the event and helped with promotional material, as well as enabling the event to be free to enter. Uptake has exceeded our expectations in both the number of participants and volunteers, and we look forward to welcoming everyone to North Leverton Windmill."
The route begins at the Scrimshire Road, running parallel to Retford to Lincoln Railway line before turning onto Cut Throat Lane, through the trees towards Welham seeing glorious views of Bassetlaw, before turning around and heading back up Cut Throat Lane to the finish at the Windmill.
Cllr Steve Scotthorne, Cabinet Member for Identity and Place said: “It’s great to see the North Leverton Windmill Trustees coming up with ideas that encourage people to be active, and to use this event as a way of helping to raise awareness of and interest in one of district’s fantastic windmills.
“North Leverton Windmill is a credit to all the hours of volunteering that takes place to keep it running for future generations to enjoy. I hope everyone has a great day and enjoys the views.”
Rural England Prosperity grants were introduced in September 2022. The grant supports rural businesses and community organisations which helps strengthen the rural economy and rural communities. Rural businesses and community organisations employing up to 49 people can apply for the grant.
