Bassetlaw District Council’s Deputy Leader has welcomed the latest significant milestone reached in the project to build the UK’s first prototype fusion power plant at West Burton.
A shortlist has been announced of five construction and engineering bids in the running to build STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) by 2040, which once completed hopes to unlock limitless clean power.
Cllr Jonathan Slater, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Estates said: “This is an exciting new chapter in the development and transformation of the former coal power plant at West Burton into the home of a world leading fusion energy plant.”
“Not only will it help create employment opportunities, it will also help bring massive investment to the area and significantly boost our local economy.”
Fusion energy has great potential to deliver a safe and virtually limitless source of clean electricity, based on the same processes that power the sun.
Detailed talks with UKIFS (UK Industrial Fusion Solutions) will now take place with one construction and one engineering partner being awarded contracts worth hundreds of millions of pounds, later this year or in early 2026.
