Decarbonisation works completed at 17b The Square, Retford

Bassetlaw District Council has future-proofed one of its key buildings in Retford by making it more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

Decarbonisation work at 17b The Square, which provides a base for the Council’s Customer Services Team, was completed just over a week ago and is expected to reduce the level of carbon emissions from the building and provide energy savings of up to £15k a year.

The project has been funded by a grant of £182k from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero as part of the latest phase of the Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.

It aims to reduce emissions from public sector buildings across the country by 75% by 2037, compared to a 2017 baseline.

Cllr Darrell Pulk, Cabinet Member for Energy and Environment said: “This decarbonisation work will help improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and help lower energy bills at the well-used building in the district, while maintaining its heritage significance.”

“It is also a positive step as we work towards our Vision 2040 to become the greenest, most sustainable district in which to live and work”.

As a heritage asset in a conservation area, 17b The Square went through several design ideas in consultation with the Council’s Conservation Team, ensuring all works that took place either preserved or improved its heritage significance.

The scope of works has included secondary glazing, double glazing, loft insulation, LED lighting, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) and a new heating distribution system to support the air source heat pumps.

This follows previous decarbonisation work at Worksop’s Queens Buildings which, reduced carbon emissions by 67% compared to the previous year.

The building is also used by various other services including Nottinghamshire Police, Citizens Advice North Nottinghamshire and Nottinghamshire County Council’s Registration Service.
