Councillor Grants help to get people online

A project to help people feel more comfortable with technology and gain access to the internet has been backed by a £350 grant from Bassetlaw District councillors.

ComuSpace CIC based in Retford is embarking on a Digital Exclusion project, which aims to help a range of people over the age of 70 or those that have no internet or Wi-Fi due to the cost-of-living crisis, to have access to the internet and online services.

The company plan to run information sessions in local communities to enable more people to access modern technology such as iPads and laptops, and with the support of ComuSpace, help them to build confidence online and carry out everyday tasks that most people take for granted.

The project hopes to lower digital poverty and increase social inclusion and Heather Davidson, founder of ComuSpace CIC, said: “I would like to thank the councillors for their donation towards the project.

“It’s important as the world becomes more digital, no one is left behind. We want to make sure that everyone feels confident accessing the internet and carrying out basic tasks, whether that’s online banking or calling friends and family. It’s key that the people  can turn to us for advice.”

Bassetlaw councillors who have provided funds from their Community Grants include: Cllr Malachi Carroll and Cllr Harriet Digby, Ward Members for East Retford West, Cllr David Challoner and Cllr Jonathan Slater, Ward Members for East Retford North, and Cllr Lynne Schuller, Ward Member for Harworth.

Cllr Carroll said: “Social inclusion is vital for communities and supporting this project to help people who feel isolated is very important to us. It also aligns with our Vision 2040, and as part of ‘Facilities for All’ ambition, ensures that people can access services and amenities no matter where they live in the district.

“While the funding has been put forward by mostly Retford councillors, we feel this project can grow to all corners of the district.”

The digital exclusion project has been launched with pop up events in different locations across Retford, including Retford Morrisons and Bassetlaw Foodbank in Manton. The project will also be visiting care homes to help get residents online which will be ideal for helping them to keep in touch with friends and family.

Events at Morrisons in Retford will be every Friday 10:30am to 2:30pm and Bassetlaw Foodbank on Wednesday 10:30am to 2:30pm.
