Community service handed out to Bassetlaw fly-tipper

A man captured on CCTV helping to fly-tip waste in Harworth and Bircotes has been ordered by Mansfield Magistrates Court to do 120 hours community service and pay costs.

Several bags of waste were discovered by a Bassetlaw District Council Environmental Health Officer at a layby on Snape Lane in September 2023.

Mobile cameras revealed Craig Chapman, of Phoenix Street in Grimsby, was a passenger in a hired vehicle used to deposit the waste, including plastic bags containing electrical cabling, light fittings, wallpaper, and a flat screen TV, on 4th September 2023.

The defendant failed to attend Mansfield Magistrates Court twice in May 2024, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

He appeared before Magistrates on 27th June 2024 where he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 120 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay costs of £1,372.

A Retford man previously pleaded guilty to the same offence at Mansfield Magistrates on 9th May 2024 and was fined £470, given a victim surcharge of £188 and ordered to pay £972 in costs.

Cllr Darrell Pulk, Cabinet Member for Environment and Energy said: “Fly-tipping won’t be tolerated in our district, and it is your responsibility to dispose of waste in the correct manner.

“It is a serious crime and there is simply no excuse or justification for it. We are encouraged that magistrates have handed out an appropriate sentence in both cases for a crime that can carry an unlimited fine, up to five years in jail, or in some circumstances, the seizing of vehicles.”
