Budding Entrepreneurs take to Retford Market

Budding entrepreneurs in Retford are getting the chance to experience the real world of retail at the district’s first Young Traders Market.

A-level students from The Elizabethan Academy are selling goods they’ve made themselves at Retford’s Big Market Day on 16th of November.

The young traders’ market has been set up in partnership with Bassetlaw District Council, the Retford Business Forum and North Notts BID to encourage more young people to consider a future career in market trading or retail.

Reece Bingham, Business and Enterprise Teacher at The Elizabethan Academy said: “This has been a fantastic opportunity for our young people to experience the realities of running a small business. The passion they have for their businesses is already evident and I cannot wait to see the future of their businesses and this project. This is just the beginning!”

Up to ten stalls are being made available for students to sell goods made by themselves or deliver services, giving them valuable experience in areas of marketing, retail, customer service and business planning.

Tom Crowther, Principle of The Elizabethan Academy said: “I am extremely proud of our students for taking part in the Young Market Trader Project. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to showcase their creativity and drive. Retford Market plays a key role in the local community and I’m sure that our students will make a very positive contribution.”

The Young Traders Market is also hoping to raise the profile of Retford Market and attract other young traders and visitors.

Rick Brand, Chair of the Retford Business Forum said: “"The Forum is delighted to support the Young Market Traders initiative - it is an approach that we have identified as a much-needed way for young people to gain real experience to become the future of Retford's business community.”

If the venture proves to be successful, it could be expanded to involve Worksop market and encourage a wider involvement from other schools.

Cllr Charles Adams, Cabinet Member for Business and Skills said: “This is a great opportunity for young people to gain experience in market trading and retail.

“I hope people come and support them when they begin trading later this week at Retford market.”

The project is being funded by UK Shared Prosperity Funding being distributed by Bassetlaw District Council.
