Bassetlaw’s new Armed Forces Champion describes role as a privilege

Bassetlaw District Council’s new Armed Forces Champion is looking forward to supporting our veterans and their families across the district in the coming months.

Cllr Sybil Fielding has been appointed to the role and describes it as a privilege, with work to support the armed forces community of vital importance.

The council is committed to making sure former personnel are well supported, acknowledged for their contribution and able to access key services.

Cllr Fielding, Armed Forces Champion said: “For many years I have been an active member of a major armed forces charity, a key part of my ongoing role will be to collaborate with veterans’ groups, clubs, and associations.

“Where individuals need help, my function is to signpost to the best route.”

The Council has committed to a new Armed Forces plan for the next four years, building on the Armed Forces Covenant Commitment which aims to make sure there is help locally for those who need it.

According to the 2021 census, nearly five thousand Bassetlaw residents have served in the forces or the reserves, the third highest total in the county after Nottingham City and Newark and Sherwood.

Support for veterans and reservists include improving service provision with partners and other agencies, providing social activities and support of peers, as well as marking events commemorating the contribution made, such as Armed Forces Day.
