Bassetlaw Museum takes action to preserve its collection

Bassetlaw Museum is taking positive action to help preserve its extensive and historically valuable collection for future generations.

A wide assortment of artifacts, not currently on display at the museum due to limited space, are stored off-site and urgently need relocating due to the existing storage building no longer being suitable to safely preserve the museum’s archive collection.

To enable the move, the Bassetlaw Museum Team will check the condition of each piece, catalogue it and carefully pack it away, before being moved to its new home. In rare cases, pieces may be transferred to other museums and feature in their public collections.

However, to enable this essential work to take place, there will be changes to the museum’s opening hours for up to a year.

Dr Mike Galer, Museum Curator at Bassetlaw Museum said:

“It is important for people to trust that objects and memories donated to the museum are well looked after and preserved for future generations to see and enjoy.

“This is why the Museum team members and Friends of Bassetlaw Museum are working hard to improve our offer for the people of Bassetlaw, including changing displays and exhibitions and improving the storage of reserve objects, many of which date back hundreds of years.

“While we will be reducing the days that the museum is open to the public, we will be using this time to develop new ways to enhance the visitor experience and support our heritage, fostering a sense of place and strengthening how people view its history.”

From Tuesday 13th May, people will be able to visit the Museum four days a week on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday between 10am and 4.30pm. (Closed Mondays and Thursdays). During school holidays, it will open as usual six days a week. The Museum’s school education sessions continue as normal during this time.
