Register to Vote - How to check that your name is on the register

Who can register to vote

  • You must be aged 16 or over.
  • You can register to vote if you’re a British citizen or an Irish citizen.
  • You can also register if you have permission to enter or stay in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man - or you do not need permission - and you are a:

    • Commonwealth citizen
    • Citizen of Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal or Spain
    • Citizen of another EU country, if you have had permission to enter or stay - or not needed permission - since 31 December 2020, and this has continued without a break
    • If you live in Scotland

Do you need to apply?

Register now if:

  • You are not registered already, or
  • You have recently moved house or changed your name, or
  • We have told you that your electoral details do not match other records

Electoral Commission

The Electoral Commission is an independent body that was set up by the UK Parliament.

Its mission is to foster public confidence and participation in the democratic process, by promoting integrity, involvement and effectiveness.

The Electoral Commission’s responsibilities include registering and regulating political parties, reviewing electoral law and procedures promoting public awareness of our electoral systems and advising those involved on the conduct of elections and referendums.
