What is climate change?
Climate change is the change in long-term average meteorological conditions around the world that is impacting ecological systems at all scales. The release of greenhouse gas emissions from natural processes and anthropogenic activities drive these shifts in climatic conditions. Controlling these emissions is crucial for determining how severe climate change will become and the extent of its predicted effects.
While climate change is a global issue that requires global cooperation, action should be taken at all levels from organisational to individual. The Council is committed to helping the District and its residents reduce their impact on the climate and ensure they are able to adapt to future conditions. Further, engagement events will be carried out within the Council to provide training and information to (all) employees to ensure they have an understanding of climate change.
If you want to find out more about climate change, take a look at some of these resources:
- The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change. They have a useful glossary of key climate-related terms and have recently produced their latest Synthesis Report.
- The UK Climate Change Committee (CCC) is an independent advisor to the UK and devolved governments which aids in reporting and monitoring emissions.
- The Met Office is the national meteorological service for the UK. As well as weather forecasting, they provide information about what is climate change and specific information about climate change in the UK.
